The Lost Highway

 By Yokairy Y. Tavarez

A suspenseful thriller that follows one woman’s harrowing ordeal to escape the clutches of a killer over and over again.

Emmaline Lera is crashing blindly through the woods in Syracuse, NY; running for her life from a man whose face she has not yet seen. After witnessing the brutal murder of her best friend during a routine car stop, she barely escapes the grip of his assailant on a frigid December night. She’s found by the police, barely alive and still hiding from the faceless killer. Detective Joshua Beach assumes watch over Emmaline throughout the night and unknowingly protects her from a danger she cannot see.

A year later Detective Beach returns to check on a cold case and an even colder Emmaline. She reluctantly admits her past to him- the drug-addled childhood, countless molestations and run from the law. She opens up to him and in turn, warms his heart with a feeling he has not ever experienced, nor expected from someone like her.

Over the course of the next four years, what starts as a timid friendship blossoms into a love affair neither could have imagined. During this time, a stranger emerges; one with a little too much interest in Emmaline. The normalcy she had begun to achieve is disrupted by a series of odd occurrences, which when grouped together, point to a menacing source. A physical altercation, rising body count and bomb threat open an investigation into which Detective Beach lunges forward in the hopes of protecting the woman with whom he has fallen in love. Aided by his own team and local bomb authorities, Detective Beach presses onward towards the identity of an intercontinental murderer wanted by multiple law enforcement agencies and hiding within the snow-covered hills of Syracuse, New York.

Meanwhile, Emmaline finds herself assaulted and abducted, coming to somewhere on a lonely stretch of highway beyond the city limits once again. Her attacker is made known and realization sets in when she learns that the same killer that had haunted her dreams has returned, this time to finish the job he started five years earlier.

Emmaline fights back and escapes into the woods once more, surrounded by endless snow and mountainous regions with nothing but her will to live keeping her from surrendering. Except this time- she is no longer running. A nasty battle ensues wherein the victim faces her attacker, and with him, a past riddled with uncertainty, fear and degradation; not knowing if she will walk away with her life, or if the killer will once again, escape with his identity unknown.
